A note in Franklin Garrett's "Atlanta 2 CONC and Environs" indicates that William Lewis Valentine was in Atlanta in 2 CONC 1855, however, he was not with his widowed mother in Campbell County 2 CONC in 1860 and he has not been located in the 1860 census. His movements 2 CONC beginning in 1862, however are fairly easy to trace since on August 2 CONC 17, 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army in Savannah, Georgia. The 2 CONC Confederate records list him variously as Lewis Volentine and Lewis 2 CONC Valentine, the first spelling undoubtedly brought about by his English 2 CONC or Scottish accent. The records on file at the Georgia Department of 2 CONC Archives and History show that William was ill and in the hospital in 2 CONC 1862. Evidently this was a serious illness because in November he was 2 CONC listed as being on a "sick furlough". He was a patient at French's 2 CONC Division Hospital, Lauderdale, Mississippi, July 10, 1863. 2 CONT 2 CONT William Lewis Valentine was married sometime in the summer of 1864 2 CONC near Atlanta to Mary Ann Harrison of Clayton County, daughter of 2 CONC William Henry Harrison and Sarah B. Fincher. On July 23, 1864, shortly 2 CONC after his marriage, William Lewis Valentine was captured in Clayton 2 CONC County by the Union forces of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman 2 CONC and the 16th Army Coups and was sent to the Military Prison at 2 CONC Louisville, Kentucky via Nashville, Tennessee. From Louisville, he was 2 CONC transferred to the Military Prison at Camp Chase, Ohio where he was 2 CONC received August 2, 1864. William became ill in prison (probably with 2 CONC disentary) and on March 4, 1865 he appeared on a list of sick and 2 CONC wounded prisoners who were to be paroled and transferred to City 2 CONC Point, (now Hopewell) Virginia to be exchanged. From this point the 2 CONC record becomes obscure. Fragmentary records indicate that the 2 CONC prisoners did arrive at City Point but that William Lewis Valentine 2 CONC died shortly after and is buried in a mass grave. Definite proof of 2 CONC this cannot be determined but all evidence seems to confirm this to be 2 CONC the true facts. William's widow, who by this time had a small son born 2 CONC in the Spring of 1865, was never notified of her husband's death and 2 CONC for the remaining 42 years of her life she never believed that he was 2 CONC dead and would someday return to here and the son he had never seen. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Confederate Record of William Lewis Valentine 2 CONT 2 CONT (Cards on file in the Confederate Records section, Georgia Department 2 CONC of Archives and History list him variously as "Lewis Voluntine" and 2 CONC "Lewis Valentine".) 2 CONT 2 CONT Enrolled as a Private in Co. The exact location cannot be 2 CONC determined because the earliest known ancestor was born on board a 2 CONC ship in 1808, however his son, William Henry C. Gray always stated 2 CONC that his father was from Scotland and he was extremely proud to be of 2 CONC Scottich origin. Old William never was reconciled to his daughter, 2 CONC Annie's marriage to Benjamin Valentine because he suspected that 2 CONC Benjamin was English and not Scottish descent. This came about because 2 CONC Benjamin had heard stories that his father, William Lewis Valentine 2 CONC had been born in England. William had kept his New York birthplace a 2 CONC secret because he was in the Confederate Army. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT William Henry C. Gray was a member of the 3rd Georgia Regiment, Army 2 CONC of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of America. He enlisted in 2 CONC 1860 at the age of 16.
